On Thursday I turned every coat I own inside out and read it. Nobody does this unless something has already gone wrong. The good ones are wool, one camel, one linen so heavy it behaves like furniture. Bury any of them and the cloth eventually loses the argument. The labels do not. Nearly every one is polyester: a little satin bureaucrat at the neck, still prepared to identify the deceased after the body has gone. In burial trials polyester comes back looking embarrassingly well while cotton beside it has been eaten into lace. Given my wardrobe, the ground would return the coats and keep the names.
The Garbage Project began in Tucson in 1973 by comparing what households said they threw away with what they actually threw away. Naturally, the two versions of the household were not identical. Later the archaeologists went into landfills with bucket augers and brought up the century in layers: newspapers, food, packaging, the usual civilization. Between 1987 and 1990 they excavated eight sanitary landfills and analysed 6.71 metric tons of refuse deposited between 1952 and 1988. The famous detail is the newspaper still legible underground. I prefer the less glamorous one: decomposition tracked moisture. A landfill keeps the rain out. Nobody told the ground to stop eating. Someone put a roof over dinner.
Skonager gives the opposite problem. Acid sand in western Jutland is excellent at making people disappear. In 2024 archaeologists found a cemetery there with children, adults, iron knives, amber, glass, and one grave in which two oval brooches had held onto pieces of wool and linen. The metal corroded; its salts killed the small lives that would ordinarily have eaten the cloth. Preservation extended exactly as far as the damage did. Beyond that inch, her clothes behaved normally and left.
The reports disagree about whether she was a child or a young woman, which is almost reassuring. Her teeth have gone to Odense and will be asked the usual intimate questions: age, diet, movement, childhood stress. Until they answer, she is the distance between two brooches and whatever shoulders once kept them apart. The museum gives her thirteen centuries and calls her Viking, though the dating is less obedient than the label. Ribe has been arguing for an earlier beginning for some time. I am content to let the archaeologists fight over the century. The brooches are enough.
One of them had already broken before burial and been repaired. That is the bit I cannot leave alone. Somebody still wanted it after it failed. Someone knew enough to make it hold, and then it held on the chest of whoever she was while the sand took almost everything else. It is difficult to improve on that without becoming sentimental, so I will not.
Then we built clothes the ground cannot finish. Polyester requires no brooch, no repair, no affection, no proximity. It can be despised perfectly well and survive us anyway. The old cloth needed poison touching it to miss decomposition by an inch. The new cloth merely needs time, and, rather indecently, does not care whether anyone has loved it.
The two grounds keep differently. One preserves by contact, accident, chemistry, the intimacy of one thing leaking into another. The other preserves by withholding weather. It keeps everything at arm’s length and calls that success. The distinction is ours, which is perhaps why the landfill finds it so easy to ignore.
I have not seen the photographs. What I have are reports describing a block of sand lifted whole, the brooches inside it, conservators going at the thing grain by grain, and a few grams of cloth sent on to someone who can still read spin, weave, perhaps colour. That is all, and it is enough.
I cut the label out of the camel coat on Friday. Four minutes, six or seven little holes at the neck, one extremely durable rectangle on my desk. I have not thrown it away.
